Lido Marini, Italy

Lido Marini Italy

Lido Marini (Li Marini in the dialect of Salento) is a seaside resort in the province of Lecce located in the lower Salento, territorially belonging to the City of Ugento, which is about 8 km, and a smaller percentage of the area belonging to the City of Salve. Formerly it belonged to the territory of Gemini which in turn was a former fief of the bishop's table. The resort, from the seaside point of view, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in all of Salento: the waters that bathe Lido Marini are in fact crystalline and transparent. Furthermore, the particularly low seabed makes bathing suitable for everyone, including inexperienced swimmers. With 23 inhabitants falling within the feud of Ugento and 10 inhabitants falling within the fief of Salve; Lido Marini has 33 residents during the year, the summer attendance reaches 25,000 inhabitants. It is located between Torre Pali (municipality of Salve) and Torre Mozza (Ugento). It extends to the foot of one of the "greenhouses" of the Cape of Leuca, at the extreme southern tip of the Puglia region. The surrounding area has vegetation dominated by the Mediterranean maquis and by the simultaneous presence of some peculiarities of mixed vegetation to the ubiquitous olive tree. In the north-west sector belonging to Ugento, one can see the presence of a water catchment area, named dialectal "Spunderati", belonging to the network of the Marina di Ugento basins, the latter connected by channels near the coastal strip between the sea of Lido Marini, Torre Mozza and Torre San Giovanni. Near the area there are typical vegetation of marshy and brackish environments, as well as sedentary and migratory fauna (mallards, teals, gray herons). The resort, exclusively tourist, has developed above all in the last fifty years after the passage from the territory of the municipality of Presicce to that of Ugento and after a growing building expansion that makes the inhabited area one of the Cape's most extensive maritime sites. Over the years, investments in the tourism sector have promoted its image and facilitated a certain increase and development. During the high season, peaks of about 35,000 inhabitants are reached. The coast is characterized by sandy beaches and shallow waters; there is also a substantial stretch of low rock, proceeding to the south. Lido Marini overlooks the "Secche di Ugento", a stretch of sea of some square km of surface, in which the seabed is kept particularly low. This has caused a series of shipwrecks since Roman times, of which traces remain in the depths. In fact, the remains of finds coming from the maritime commercial routes abound along the whole stretch of sea of Lido Marini, as well as in Torre Pali. It does not present tourist attractions of historical-artistic interest, except for a small stone wall in Lecce located between the main square and the beach dedicated to the "sea heroes", those who gave their lives in an attempt to save people in serious difficulties among the waves.
